Feedback 2.2.10

Laura, don't forget to evaluate informally your finished project. Next post your audience feedback findings using sharts etc to summarise and reflect on them. You'll need them for the evaluation. You should aim to scan one of your completed questionnaires to illustrate your research.

Final Design

My magazine is aimed at females 16+ and the genre of the magazine is indie. I believe I have been successful in targeting such an audience through use of colours (purple, black, white and pinks) as well as the layout and the information given to my audience. By using a mix of femanine and masculine colours I have targeted a female audience and also matched the indie genre found in magazines today. By using a mixed gender group on my front cover with the female of the group taking lead I have appealed to both the desires of females as well as their needs. The layout of the magazine is both eye catching as well as informative which is what is needed when trying to target any audience as it needs to be both attention seeking and interesting.

Draft Of Magazine Article

Planned Photo Shoot

I planned my photo shoot towards the beginning of designing my magazine. I asked my friend Chloe Grice to be a model in my photos as she is thin (which liked or not is a common theme running through the media these days) and she also knew various members of bands that would also be able to be models in my photos. I later decided on having Chloe and two other boys which she sorted out for me in no time. The two boys I used were called Sam Hunter and Alex Smith. Sam studies music and another college and is also in a band so he had musical equiptment he was happy to use as props in my photo shoot. As I decided on the colour scheme for my magazine I made it clear I wanted their costumes to match my colour scheme so Chloe wore purple and blue whilst Sam wore red and blue. AS Chloe was the lead singer of the band I wanted her to be situated in the middle and at the front of all the photos taken. This looked effective as she was the only girl in the band. It took me until after christmas to get my photos done but I was very pleased with the end result.

Equiptment And Technologies Used

When designing my magazine I used the following equiptment:

1 - Digital camara: I used a digital camara when taking photos of the band I used for my front cover, contents page and double page spread.

2 - In Design: I used In Design when creating my magazine adding photos, writing and decoration where needed.

3 - Photoshop: I used Photoshop when editing and cutting the photos I took for the front cover, contents page and double page spread.

4 - Internet: I used the internet often for most of my research, for access to my blog and to help me find ideas for my magazine.

5 - Various Magazines and Posters: I analysed different magazines and posters, I also looked at the different ways of writing used in magazines which eventually helped me to write my own double page spread.

EMAP

EMAP are an institution I have found that would produce and distribute my product. They advertise, Exhibit, partnership and sponsor almost any need involving the media. When visiting the webiste http://www.emap.com/ i clicked on sectors and media to find out more about what EMAP has to offer regarding media. I read the article about media through this link www.emap.com/sectors/media.

The Killers Poster

This poster is of a band that meets the indie genre. The dark editing used reflects the mood of the genre and also the band. It is simple yet effective to an audience who are fans of The Killers. All members of the band are on the front, some are looking directly at the audience which is a common theme used on posters when advertising as the audience feels connected with the advertisement even though they are not. This is called a direct mode of address. Some of the band members are not looking forward at the audience which may attract and audience who like breaking the rules and being a little different, very much what the indie genre is all about.

Media Theory To Present Target Audience

First of all, I need to design my magazine to fit a certain type of target audience. The audience I am going to target my magazine at is the 'individual' as this group responds to advertising and marketing that emphasises quirkiness or individualism. The four catogaries I have decided to use are:

KIPPERS: Kids In Parents' Pockets Eroding Retirement Savings

ROB: Rich Ordinary Briton

SNERT: Snot-Nosed Egostical Rude Teenager

TEPID: Tastes Expensive, Pension Inadequate, Dammit

Demographic and psychographic profiling:

The media industries grew following WW2 and so a need to identify and target different segments of the audience grew in order to market certain products to the 'type' of people that would buy it.

The first type of profiling to develop was demographic which involved grouping the audience into smaller groups based on variables such as ages, gender, geographical area, class, economics, religion, sexuality ect. This method groups people according to the lives they lead or economic status. The socio-economic groups I will be targeting my magazine at are C1 and above which means 'skilled non manual' such as sales assistants ect.

Because not all sales assistants will be the same due to religion, age and not sharing the same interests there is a flaw in demographic profiling which then leads me to looking at psychographic profiling. This type of profiling assumes the audience to be complex and to have certain needs which must be gratified. The psychographic profiling group I will be targeting my magazine at is the 'mainstreamers' - 40% of the market, this is the largest section of the market. This group seeks security in comformity and thus tend to buy well known brand names.

When designing my magazine I also need to think about the buyer's needs

A - attention (awareness): attract the attention of the customer.

I - interest: raise customer interest by focusing on and demonstrating advantages and benefits (instead of focusing on features, as done in traditional advertising).

D - desire: convince customers that they want and desire the product or service that will satisy their needs.

A - action: lead customers towards taking action and/or purchasing.

S - satisfaction: satisfy the customer so they will become a repeat customer and give referrals to a product.

The magazine needs to meet Maslow's hierachy of needs.

Identifying Target Audience

My target audience is going to be 16+ as some of the information featured is unsuitable for people under that age group. The genre for my target audience is female as when looking round I did not see much on the market for females only, it was very male dominated. My magazine will be aimed at females who like the Indie music genre. Here is a questionaire given to my target audience to see how I must structure my magazine if I want it to attract and entertain my target audience.
